Panerathon to Benefit Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center

Learn more about The Panerathon

The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center (JACBCC) at St. Elizabeth Health Center delivers the most accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care.
History of the JACBCC
Joanie Abdu served as a beloved nurse at St. Elizabeth for more than 20 years. She was a role model for other nurses and was highly respected by physicians, staff, patients and families. After she married Dr. Rashid Abdu, she volunteered for many projects and fundraising activities at St. Elizabeth. In 1993, Joanie was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She lost her battle and died June 2, 1994, 15 months to the day she was diagnosed. After Joanie’s death, Dr. Abdu became committed to researching, planning and creating the development for a comprehensive breast care center at St. Elizabeth.  At this center, diagnosis time is shortened to eliminate the agonizing wait for patients and family members, physicians treating each patient confer on the best treatment options for each individual patient, and other corresponding services are offered in addition to medical services.

How Panerathon supports the JACBCC?
In 2011, Panerathon raised over $191,000 with one hundred percent of the proceeds devoted exclusively to the JACBCC. Mr. Sam Covelli and Covelli enterprises were so pleased by the outpouring of support in both Panerathon 2010 and Panerathon 2011, they have decided to make it a signature fundraising event for HMHP’s JACBCC.

The HMHP Foundation will be working with many people around HMHP in 2012 to establish the Joanie’s Promise Fund.  With support from the Panerathon and other areas of the community, it is our hope that Joanie’s Promise will be implemented sometime during the fall of 2012.  Updates to follow.

What is Joanie's Promise?
Joanie’s Promise is that ALL women will have access to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center.  Therefore, all screening expenses will be covered for any woman who demonstrates financial need.  Also, transportation will be provided for any woman who requires it.

Joanie's Promise will also support a dedicated breast cancer community educator who will work solely on spreading the word about Joanie's Promise and educating the community about the importance of breast cancer screenings.

In short, Joanie's Promise will ensure that every woman in the Mahoning Valley is aware of, able to get to and is welcome at the JACBCC.

Those who sponsor and participate in Panerathon will be saving lives!  Through education and screenings, breast cancer rates in the Mahoning Valley will be reduced.  We will not have the fourth highest breast cancer mortality rate in the country.

“Through my ears, Joanie hears the voices of grateful women for the care they will receive in this magnificent facility.
Through my eyes, she sees the reality of what once was only a dream.
Through our souls, we both see the beauty, the love, the compassion and the generosity of a
caring community that has made that dream come true.
We are, and will always be, eternally grateful.”
