Occupational Therapy Developing Skills for the Job of Living
Humility of Mary Health Partners’ Occupational Therapy Services focus on helping patients regain independence in the areas of self-care, work and leisure following an illness or accident. Inpatient and outpatient services are available for people who have suffered from:
- An amputation
- Extremity fracture or dislocation
- Reconstructive surgery
- A stroke
- Head or spinal cord injury
- Heart and lung disease
- Pediatric developmental delays and birth defects
New patients are assessed on ability to care for themselves, coordination, vision, strength and cognition. Therapists identify key problems and develop a treatment plan with a focus on facilitating client function. Patients are taught how to live in the scope of what they can do physically and how to maximize what they can do to lead a safe, productive life.
Managing on Your Own The goal for most patients is to prepare to go home and resume daily activities such as getting dressed, getting up from a chair, getting in and out of the bathtub, functioning in the kitchen, and using the washer and dryer.
Patients are taught to safely manage on their own by a dedicated staff of occupational therapists trained in the prescription and use of various adaptive aides to help patients dress, bathe, eat, clean, read, drive and perform many other everyday tasks.
Family and caregivers are also trained in helping patients with these activities and how to identify safety hazards and the need for modifications in the home.
Hand Therapy Hand problems can occur over time or very rapidly, making activities of daily living difficult. Our outpatient hand therapy is a comprehensive rehabilitation program to treat the affects of:
- Arthritis
- Traumatic nerve injury
- Post surgical soft tissue trauma
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tendonitis
Occupational therapists instruct and educate patients in strengthening, stretching, joint protection, energy conservation, adaptive equipment and techniques to increase independence and quality of life. Home exercise programs help patients to continue to improve after they have been discharged from therapy. Therapists work closely with physicians to provide the most effective treatment and outcome for the patient.
Pediatric Rehabilitation Our pediatric therapists are specially trained to care for the needs of children from newborn to adolescent. They focus on motor development, vision and perception, sensory processing, and self-care and play ability.
A strong team approach ensures comprehensive treatment for all children with treatment techniques individualized based on the child’s needs. A strong focus is placed on training the family to carry out the treatment and skills at home and assisting them in ordering appropriate equipment as needed.
